Eroski is a Spanish supermarket chain with nearly 1,000 outlets spread across Spain (excluding franchises), ranging in size from the largest hypermarkets to smaller Eroski Center and Eroski City stores.
When looking to store, transport and display some of their bulkier fruit and vegetables such as potatoes, oranges and watermelons, Eroski approached Polymer Logistics for ideas and advice. Ideally the crate had to be compatible with packing facilities and easy to handle throughout the supply chain; offer protection during transit; act as an in-store display to reduce replenishment costs; and finally occupy minimal space on the reverse logistics leg. Quite a challenge!
We proposed our folding MaxiCrate, not only for its size and durability, but as an efficient "one-touch" solution which has subsequently met all Eroski's packaging, logistics, and in-store display requirements. Once produce is placed in the MaxiCrate it remains untouched until picked by the supermarket customer, with the open-fronted design making it easy to select the produce inside. Moreover, as the contents are well protected during transit, damage is substantially reduced and potential sales are maximized.
The minimal handling involved also impacts on replenishment costs. Filled crates are delivered, via DC, to the stores and wheeled straight onto the retail floor. No need for manual handling onto merchandising shelves – the produce can simply be sold straight from the MaxiCrate, then the empty units are quickly folded and stacked for the return journey. From packing centre to DC to retail outlet, the MaxiCrate has enabled Eroski to reduce their costs at every stage of the supply chain.
